DeOx vs Argentium

Argentium International asked Ronda Coryell to test the new DeOx alloy sold by Rio Grande and to compare it with Argentium.   Ronda started with roller printed sheet cut to identical dimensions for each alloy.   The fusing was carried out on a charcoal block using Purple flux. The torch was a Smith Acetylene Air.

It can be seen that the DeOx alloy has suffered from surface melting as the sides of the backing sheet have pulled inwards and the surface patten has started to disappear.  The round wire has also started to melt into the back plate.  The DeOx alloy composition contains large amounts of tin and zinc.   The low melting phase caused by this combination has resulted in an excessive amount of metal flowing into the fused joins

In contrast the Argentium sheet shows very crisp fused joins with no loss of the roller pattern or shrinkage of the back plate.

Use Masking Mud to protect your bezel while fusing with Ronda Coryell

Argentium Masking Mud is an anti-fusing agent that helps ensure a crisp, clean fusion of metal parts when soldering or fusing them together. The mud protects the metal adjacent to the area to be joined so that the joint is precisely—and only—where you want it. The mud also serves to prevent the adjacent metal form or structures from distorting under the heat of the soldering/fusing flame.

How to mix your masking mud with Ronda Coryell

Mix a scoop of powder with a few drops of water until you reach the desired consistency.

Apply flux first to the area to be joined then let dry.

Apply a thin coat of the mud to areas that you do not want to fuse or solder.

After your workpiece cools, easily remove the masking mud with water and a soft brush, then pickle.
